Many people kickback and enjoy a cold beer or nice glass of wine with a meal or just to relax. But does alcohol consumption pose a risk to our health and physical therapy patients? The answer can be difficult to find amongst the literature, especially due to industry influence. Let's take a look at the guidelines, some upcoming revisions to alcohol intake recommendations, and what all this means to PTs and physical therapy outcomes.
Alcohol intakeĀ guidanceĀ varies depending on where you live. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Dietary Guidelines demonstrates that females should consume no more than 1 drink per day, while males can have 2 drinks per day. Most of this guidance is rooted in the fact that males usually have larger mass, and therefore, can physiologically "handle" more booze. I know, I said it. And you are wondering why in the heck a physical therapist, personal trainer, and strength coach would ever say such a thing?!
A few years ago a group of researchers published a wonderful editorial piece in theĀ British Journal of Sports Medicine. Titled It is time to bust the myth of physical inactivity and obesity: you cannot outrun a bad diet, the article stirred the pot and highlighted important data on weight loss.
The literature highlighted how many sports medicine, physio, andĀ personal training professional are biased to exercise asĀ theĀ main mode for weight loss. Furthermore, the authors came out and boldly stated that physical activity does not promote weight loss.Ā That's right, physical activity does not promote weight loss.
If these researchers are right, then why is the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) hanging their professional "hat" on PTs promoting physical activity...
