Understanding Your Alaska PT CE Requirements

The Alaska State Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Board mandates that all licensed physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) complete continuing education (CE) every two years to maintain an active license. These standards ensure clinicians maintain professional competency, stay informed on evolving standards of care, and deliver evidence-based clinical practices across Alaska.

To maintain your license, renewals occur biennially by June 30 of even-numbered years. Understanding how the board grants course approvals under Alaska Administrative Code (12 AAC 54.420) is essential for selecting eligible contact hours and completing your renewal stress-free.

Key Points atWhat Counts for Alaska PT CE Approval?

  • 24-Hour Biennial Standard: PTs and PTAs licensed for 12 months or more must submit 24 contact hours every two years (ending June 30 of even-numbered years).
  • 12-Hour First-Year Rule: Clinicians licensed for less than 12 months during the concluding cycle require only 12 contact hours.
  • Board Approval & Reciprocity (12 AAC 54.420): At least half of your hours must come from an accredited academic institution or a board-approved professional organization (including components of the APTA, such as FPTA).
  • Contact Hour Conversion: 1 contact hour equals 50 minutes of instruction. 1 CEU awarded by a health association equals 10 contact hours.
  • Audit Protection: Maintain detailed certificates showing course titles, exact dates, instructor credentials, learning objectives, and hours for 3 years post-renewal.

What Counts for Alaska PT CEU Approval?

The Alaska State Board accepts continuing education courses under a reciprocal approval framework outlined in 12 AAC 54.420. You do not need to seek individual pre-approval for every course provided it meets recognized organizational standards.

The Reciprocal Acceptance Rule

Under Alaska regulation 12 AAC 54.420(a), Alaska officially recognizes courses that are approved by state physical therapy associations (such as the Florida Physical Therapy Association - FPTA, a component of the APTA). If a course carries FPTA approval and is clinically relevant to physical therapy practice, it satisfies your Alaska CE requirements.

Built by a DPT who saw the gap.

Dr. Sean M. Wells, DPT, PT, OCS, ATC/L, CSCS, CNPT, CNPT developed this curriculum after recognizing that nutrition was the "missing link" in his own clinical practice. Based in Florida, Dr. Wells designed these courses to ensure that every DPT can confidently provide nutritional counseling that stays within the legal and professional guidelines of the APTA.

Most Physical Therapists are not trained in Nutrition

Nutrition directly impacts healing, inflammation, and recovery—yet most DPT programs leave a gap in this essential science. Stop guessing at nutritional advice and start using an evidence-based system that fits your scope of practice. Our continuing education courses are designed to provide continuing education in Alaska for:

  • Physical Therapists (PTs) & Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs)
  • Occupational Therapists (OTs) & Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs)
  • Athletic Trainers (ATs)
  • Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP)

Courses are approved via FPTA reciprocity for Physical Therapy clinicians. OTs, ATs, and SLPs should check their respective state board guidelines for individual approval.

The Benefits of Nutrition Training for PTs:

Without Structured Training:

  • Potential for missed screening
  • Missed referral opportunities related to nutrition
  • Missed opportunities for improved recovery
  • Limited patient guidance

With the CNPT® Program:

Aligned with National Standards: Your knowledge directly aligns with the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) House of Delegates (HOD) passed measure stating that PTs can and should provide nutritional counseling within their scope of training and education.

  • Confident integration of nutrition into care
  • Improved patient outcomes and recovery
  • Better clinical decision-making
