Understanding Arizona CEU Requirements and Compliance for PTs and PTAs

The Arizona State Board of Physical Therapy mandates that all licensed physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) complete continuing education to maintain an active license. In Arizona, this requirement is officially governed under the standard of Continuing Competence. Rather than simply checking a professional box, Arizona's framework ensures clinicians advance their clinical reasoning, maintain safety protocols, and stay aligned with modern, evidence-based physical therapy care.

Arizona operates on a biennial renewal cycle, meaning licenses must be renewed every two years by August 31 of even-numbered years. To prevent an administrative license suspension, you must acquire your certified credits within this two-year compliance window. Understanding how the state board classifies Arizona PT CEU approval is critical for selecting qualifying courses that safely protect your license from a random state audit.

What Counts for Arizona PT CEU Approval?

A key aspect of Arizona compliance is understanding that the Arizona State Board of Physical Therapy does not pre-approve individual CEU courses or education vendors. Instead, the board establishes structural criteria for course approval and places the professional judgment on you, the licensee, to select qualifying activities.

To satisfy the state's highest standard, continuing education hours must qualify as Category A activities. According to Arizona administrative code, a course automatically achieves Category A status if it is approved by a recognized state or national physical therapy association (such as the Florida Physical Therapy Association).

Because our comprehensive clinical nutrition curriculum is FPTA-approved, our courses carry automatic reciprocal approval as Category A Continuing Competence activities in Arizona.

The Biennial Hourly & Category Breakdown

To meet your total continuing competence mandate, your contact hours must adhere to the following category distributions:

  • Physical Therapists (PT): 20 contact hours total every two years. A minimum of 10 hours must be earned in Category A activities. The remaining 10 hours can be clinical electives or split into Category B (study groups, self-instruction) and Category C (practice management, teaching).
  • Physical Therapist Assistants (PTA): 10 contact hours total every two years. A minimum of 6 hours must be earned in Category A activities.
  • 100% Online Category A Access: There is no restriction on completing your Category A hours through asynchronous, self-paced online courses, provided the program carries state-association backing.

Essential Certificate Criteria for State Audits

During the online renewal process, you will sign an electronic affirmation certifying that you have hit your required credit thresholds. You do not upload your certificates to the state portal at the time of renewal. However, the board conducts strict random audits after the portal closes.

To guarantee your course documentation passes a state board audit, your certificate must explicitly show:

  • The official date, course title, and sponsoring provider.
  • The exact number of instructional contact hours received.
  • Clear behavioral learning objectives and instructor credentials.
  • Proof of completion (such as a formal certificate of attendance).
  • Record Retention: Arizona law requires you to maintain detailed records of all completed certificates for potential audit validation.
