Unlike many states that use a fixed biennial date, New York uses a triennial (3-year) registration period based on your individual date of licensure.

New York PT/PTA CEU Requirements

New York requires 36 hours of approved continuing education (CE) during each three-year registration period.

  • Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA), 36 hours, (100% can be online)
  • First-Time Renewal 0 hours*, Exempt for the first 3-year period
  • *Pro-Tip: If you were licensed by examination in New York, you are exempt from CE requirements for your first 3-year registration period. If you were licensed by endorsement (moving from another state), your hours may be prorated.

New York Mandatory Training

While New York doesn't have "mandatory" subject hours within the 36-hour CE requirement, all healthcare professionals in NY must complete:

  1. Infection Control Training: Required every 4 years.
  2. Mandated Reporter Training: An updated curriculum on child abuse identification is required by November 17, 2026 for all licensees.

The New York PT License Renewal Process: Step-by-Step

New York uses a "PIN-based" online renewal system.

  1. Locate Your PIN: Your unique PIN is sent via mail/email in your renewal notice about 4-5 months before your expiration. If you lost it, use the NYSED PIN Retrieval System.
  2. Access the Portal: Log in to the NYSED Online Registration Renewal.
  3. Affirm CE Completion: You will be asked if you have completed the required 36 hours. You do not need to upload certificates.
  4. Pay the Fee: PTs pay $224; PTAs pay $103 via credit card.
  5. Record Retention: Keep your CE certificates for at least six years (two registration cycles) in case of an audit.
