The Pennsylvania State Board of Physical Therapy requires all licensed physical therapists and certified physical therapist assistants to obtain continuing education credits to protect public safety and advance clinical knowledge. Pennsylvania monitors these as Contact Hours of continuing physical therapy education. The state operates on a standard biennial cycle ending on December 31st of even-numbered years.
What Counts for Pennsylvania PT CEU Approval?
Pennsylvania accepts online home-study courses, provided they meet structural standards and align with direct patient care and physical therapy clinical skills.
The Biennial Hourly Breakdown
- Physical Therapists (PT) & Assistants (PTA): 30 contact hours total every two years.
- Online Allowance: 100% of your standard physical therapy electives may be completed through online home-study frameworks.
- Mandatory Subjects: All licensees must secure at least 2 hours in Law or Ethics applicable to physical therapy, and 2 hours of DHS-approved Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting (Act 31). PTAs also require 4 hours in identifying/responding to Emergency Health Conditions.
