Understanding Virginia PT CEU Requirements

The Virginia Board of Physical Therapy mandates that all licensed physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) complete mandatory continuing education to maintain an active license. In Virginia, these hours are officially categorized as Contact Hours of continuing learning activities. The regulatory framework is designed to challenge clinicians to diversify their clinical skills, integrate evidence-based interventions, and uphold high standards of patient safety across the Commonwealth.

Virginia utilizes a strict biennial renewal cycle, with all licenses expiring on December 31st of each even-numbered year (with the upcoming deadline falling on December 31, 2026). To protect your license from an administrative lapse, you must secure your required hours within this two-year window. Understanding how the board distinguishes between Virginia PT CEU approval categories is critical for choosing courses that count directly toward your license preservation.

What Counts for Virginia PT CEU Approval?

Unlike states with a singular tracking system, the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy splits its 30-hour requirement into two distinct classifications: Type 1 (Approved/Organized hours) and Type 2 (Self-Directed hours). The board does not pre-approve individual courses or vendors; instead, it establishes structural rules based on who accredits the coursework.

The Power of Reciprocal Type 1 Approval

To satisfy your Type 1 requirement, a course must be sponsored, provided, or approved by an accredited healthcare entity, a university, or another state licensing board for physical therapy.

Because our comprehensive clinical nutrition curriculum is approved by the Florida Physical Therapy Association (FPTA), our courses carry automatic reciprocal validation as Type 1 Contact Hours in Virginia. Virginia clinicians can complete this training 100% online and purchase directly from our primary platform without needing an external partner portal.

The Mandatory Biennial Hour Breakdown

To fulfill your continuing learning obligations, your 30 contact hours must be structured according to your specific license type.

  • 30 Hours Every 2 Years: Both PTs and PTAs must complete 30 total contact hours before December 31st of even years.
  • Strict Type 1 Minimums: PTs must secure at least 20 Type 1 hours; PTAs must secure at least 15 Type 1 hours.

Type 1 Definition: Organized clinical programs directly related to physical therapy practice that carry approval from recognized state chapters, the APTA, or other state licensing boards.

Type 2 Definition: Self-directed activities related to clinical practice, which can include peer consultations, independent research, clinical student supervision, or independent study. (Note: Our individual courses can also be utilized as Type 2 hours if chosen for independent study).

Key Points at a Glance

  • 30 Hours Every 2 Years: Both PTs and PTAs must complete 30 total contact hours before December 31st of even years.
  • Strict Type 1 Minimums: PTs must secure at least 20 Type 1 hours; PTAs must secure at least 15 Type 1 hours.
  • Reciprocal Approval Valid: Courses with sister-state board approval (such as FPTA) are fully honored as Type 1 hours in Virginia.
  • 320-Hour Active Practice Rule: Clinicians must maintain active clinical practice baselines across every rolling four-year window.
  • 4-Year Audit Window: Archive all certificates containing clear dates, learning objectives, and verified contact hours for four full years.

The Active Practice Mandate

In addition to your instructional contact hours, Virginia enforces a unique Active Practice Requirement. To qualify for a standard active license renewal, clinicians must be able to attest to a minimum of 320 hours of active physical therapy practice within the preceding four years. Record Retention for Random Board Audits When submitting your renewal application, you will electronically attest to your hours and active practice status. You do not mail your completion certificates to the board. However, Virginia utilizes a strict random audit process. By state law, you are required to maintain all physical or digital CE certificates for 4 years following your renewal date.
