Dr. Wells here from Nutritional Physical Therapy. Today, we're talking about GLP myths. So probably the biggest thing in the marketplace in the last few years has been GLP medications. They're huge for weight loss. The myth really isn't that they'll fix weight loss. They actually will do a great job for weight loss, and they help patients lose significant amount of weight, which helps their joints and reduces their heart disease risk.
[00:25-01:00]

but the biggest fear is that glp medications will lead to extensive muscle mass loss and the reality is that that's not just just not the case there's several studies that show that taking these medications can promote significant weight loss but just as in any weight loss and we've covered this in other blog posts and we cover this in our 3part course series anytime you lose weight you can lose muscle mass so The reality that GLP medications cause significant muscle mass loss isn't necessarily true in and of itself.
[01:00-01:27]

So what do we need to know as rehab professionals? Well, I'd say the biggest thing is that there are specific dietary patterns that can help these patients. So one of which is increasing lean protein intake can help some of that muscle mass loss. More importantly, as rehab and exercise professionals, we need to be prescribing resistance training to these patients 2 to 3 times a week. This is going to help them produce that anabolic stimulus to prevent the weight loss.
[01:28-01:51]

And I know I've been practicing since two thousand nine and some of my patients that would come in and see me with an orthopedic element and then continue on with my wellness protocols. I often include resistance training. And a lot of, I remember some of the weight loss physicians that would refer to me are like, why are you having them work out? It's going to make them hungrier. We want them just to lose weight. We don't need them. You fix their knee or you fix their shoulder. We don't need them lifting weight.
[01:51-02:16]

And I used to try to explain to them about how important muscle mass was then. And now it's not just muscle mass, right? In our other blog posts and our other videos, we've covered how GLP medications or just weight loss in general can promote weight. not only muscle mass loss, but bone mineral density loss in the long run. So the big thing is changing one lever, right? That the medications affect the way patients eat, which causes them to lose weight.
[02:16-02:35]

But we can alter those things as well. We can alter what they're eating by educating them on increasing their lean protein intake slightly. And we can also educate them on the resistance training and exercise they need to be doing. If you want to know more about GLP medications and specific dietary interventions, check out our nutritional physical therapy website.
