Physical Therapists and Corona Virus: What to do?

Our world has changed drastically in the last month with the progression of the novel Corona virus, also known as COVID-19. A stock market crash, travel halting, to thousands of people dying, COVID-19 is taking its effect rapidly. Many business owners and workers across the world, physical therapists included, are being impacted by this virus. What are physical therapists to do with all of this time and lack of productivity? My response is to keep learning!

I was having a great chat with Erson Religioso (aka The Manual Therapist) last week. He too was frustrated with being at home. Sitting idle does not suit either Erson's or my personalities. So we discussed what could we best do with our time? We both agreed that this is the time for us to take those online courses we have been putting off.

Many physical therapists are sitting at home waiting for the virus to pass, furloughed from work, or are simply doing the smart thing and keeping patient contact to a minimum. While this "downtime" seems futile it doesn't have to feel like wasted time. Could you start using telehealth and virtual sessions to see your patients? Absolutely. Do you feel like navigating the G codes, rules, and severely limited session times? No thanks, I'll pass. Instead make the brief calls to your clients for the right reasons and then focus on you and your development as a PT.

So what courses did Erson and think would be good? We actually decided to enroll in each other's courses. He had a desire to learn more about how nutrition can directly impact physical therapy outcomes. He loved the idea of having certification specific to nutrition and physical therapy, the Certified Nutritional Physical Therapy (CNPT) credential. Meanwhile, I have been behind the curve-ball on learning about blood flow restriction (BFR) and loved the idea of becoming Certified in Modern Strength Training (CertMST). Erson's courses are well-respected and I am excited to devote my time to learning new skills.

I know that both Erson and I will be filling our time gaining knowledge, skills, and certifications that will help us help our patients in the not too distant future. Now, you should do the same! See you in class soon!
