CEU Requirements for PTAs Vary by State

Continuing education requirements for Physical Therapist Assistants are set at the state level, meaning there is no single national standard. Each state determines how many CEU hours are required, how often licenses must be renewed, and what types of courses qualify.

For example, some states require up to 40 contact hours every two years, while others have lower requirements or different renewal cycles. Because of this variation, PTAs should always verify their specific state board requirements to remain compliant.

What Counts as a CEU for PTAs

CEUs, sometimes referred to as contact hours or continuing competency units, represent time spent in approved educational activities. In most cases, one contact hour equals approximately 50 to 60 minutes of learning.

PTAs can earn CEUs through a variety of formats, including:

  • Online courses and webinars
  • Live workshops and seminars
  • Academic coursework or certifications
  • Professional activities such as teaching or publishing

Not all activities are accepted in every state, so it is important to confirm eligibility before completing a course. Looking for a nutrition-focused course? Check out ours.

Importance of Verifying State Requirements

Because CEU requirements can change, it is essential for PTAs to verify their state’s current rules before enrolling in any course. Even when a provider lists state approvals or reciprocity, the responsibility for compliance ultimately falls on the licensee. Checking directly with your state board helps ensure your CEUs will count toward renewal and prevents delays or penalties.
